「Train」

"Train" for Life's Journeys      6E   John Xu
In this summer holiday, I participated in a meaningful and memorable programme called "Train" for Life's Journeys Programme 2011, which was organised by MTR and CUSUS. That must be one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had as that is a valuable opportunity to meet friends coming from different schools around Hong Kong.

This programme was divided into few parts: the group activities in a campsite, the follow-up workshop and the fieldwork in MTR stations.
Through a series of challenging tasks in the campsite, we build up friendship and learned teamwork spirit — to appreciate each other, to encourage and support, and to contribute to your team wholeheartedly. That is to say, not to ask what the team can do for you, but to question what you can do for your team. It did not matter that I won or lost in those games, something much more important is that I really enjoyed the process.

After the tiring missions, the workshops were held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This session was mainly focused on how to get along well with others and to gain a better recognition of yourself. It is essential to know how others view on you and if it is the same as you think of yourself. Getting these opinions, I could modify myself better to be what I am supposed to be and have a better preparation on getting along with others in the future. In those few days, there was one more thing out of my expectation, but impressed me a lot: all of us came across "Father of Fiber Optics" Charles K. Kao! What a wonderful time that was!

The last part of programme is the fieldwork in MTR stations. I was given the chance to visit the control centers and the depots to have a better understanding of operation of MTR trains. Besides, I can serve people at the stations and help conduct surveys as interviewers on behalf of MTR. That made me feel a strong sense of belonging that I wondered if I were one of MTR members. Therefore, I sensed that why MTR runs so well, the reason is the teamwork spirit. Workers in this big team are willing to contribute, eager to devote themselves in their position.

All in all, I broadened my horizon and met a lot of new friends through this programme. I learned to keep a positive attitude towards my life journey and the difficulties as well. It was worthwhile to take part in this programme.
